MIT Media Lab @Tokyo 2012: Welcome from Media Lab Director Joi Ito

I am thrilled to be coming to Tokyo in January to host my first Japan-based Media Lab event since becoming director of the MIT Media Lab in September. The all-day event, The Power of Open: Scaling the Eco System, will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at the Dentsu Hall in Shiodome, Tokyo.
As I have mentioned to the Media Lab community–and as many of you who have worked with me in the past already know–I come to the Lab with a strong bias toward openness. I see the Lab more as a platform than a container. For me, innovation is all about collaborating–about having the most open environment for exchanging ideas and building things together. And that, I hope, will be the essence of our January event.
While the Lab has held events in Tokyo before, this is the first time we are inviting guests–both prospective members and local friends–in order to extend our network even more broadly.
While we will feature a number of presentations, including talks by Hiroshi Ishii, Nicholas Negroponte, other Lab researchers, and me, the meeting itself will be much more participatory than in the past. It will include sessions where all attendees will be asked to participate and collaborate with us, so please come prepared to join in and contribute!
I look forward to having you join us.
