"Hiroshi Ishii founded the Tangible Media Group (MIT Media Lab) in 1995. He works to develop new tangible interfaces between man and machine. The concept of augmented reality was coined towards the end of the sixties by Ivan E. Sutherland, one of the father's of graphic information. Contrary to the concept of virtual reality where artificial images are produced, augmented reality adds extra information and images to the perception of reality. The interactive efficiency between the virtual world of the bit (or numeric unity of measure) and the physical world of the atom consists in creating intelligent technical bridges. In the case of the ping pong table, it is necessary to capture and interpret the impacts of the ball on the table and to project a reactive image. In this example, the superposition of real and virtual generated three different applications: comets, lightning, and moving school of fish in the midst of concentric circles. The name PingPongPlus humorously refers to one of the first video games, Pong, edited by Atari in 1972."
